Legendary Pictures and Capcom have confirmed the release date, cast, and story details for the new live-action Street Fighter movie. The film will be directed by Kitao Sakurai, set in 1993, and is scheduled to open in IMAX on October 16, 2026.
Release date & format
Legendary and Capcom announced that Street Fighter will be in theaters on October 16, 2026. In addition, the studio said the movie will be filmed for IMAX.
Furthermore, Legendary described the film as aiming to “will honor the quarter-pumping, button-mashing spirit of the 90s classic while leveling up for a new generation of fans.” That line comes directly from the studio’s announcement.
Setting and story synopsis
The movie is set in 1993, the same year Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers hit arcades. According to a Legendary press release, the official synopsis reads exactly:
“Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!”
