Details
The adaptation was revealed during Gamescom 2025. ARCH is producing the anime, and Crunchyroll will have exclusive streaming rights. The series will follow the game’s story directly and emphasize hand-drawn 2D action and sword combat.
Director Kenichi Kutsuna described his approach to the action, saying: “As an action animator, my core philosophy is to return to the basics. Sword combat with Japanese swords is inherently rigorous, and I want to depict that reality without flinching — capturing the weight of each strike, the body, and life itself. By embracing the hand-drawn essence of 2D animation, we can achieve a transcendent beauty in action that goes beyond cool to something deeply poignant.”
Staff and cast
Alongside Kutsuna, the project lists screenwriter Takuya Satou, character designer Takahiro Kishida, and composer Shuta Hasunuma. The announced cast includes Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro/The Divine Heir, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina. Additionally, Crunchyroll’s chief content officer Asa Suehira commented on the adaptation: “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a game known for its precision and intensity, and those qualities carry through beautifully in this adaptation.”
Partners and timing
The production credits mention collaboration with Kadokawa and Qzil.la, in addition to ARCH. Sekiro: No Defeat is expected to stream on Crunchyroll sometime in 2026. For context, this adaptation is one of at least two high-profile FromSoftware projects moving into screen media; for example, Elden Ring is getting a film from A24 written and directed by Alex Garland.
