Silent Hill f: Beauty Meets Terror in the Next Chapter of the Iconic Horror Series
Horror fans, get ready! Konami just gave us a sneak peek at Silent Hill f during their recent livestream, and the devs are taking the series in a bold new direction. The biggest twist? This time, the haunting atmosphere of Silent Hill moves from Maine to 1960s Japan. And trust us, they want you to find the beauty hidden in all that terror.
- Silent Hill f shifts the action to Japan in the Showa Era
- Main theme: “Find the beauty in terror”
- Play as an ordinary high school girl, Hinako Shimizu
- Visuals blend uneasiness with a unique charm
- Release set for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X on September 25
From Maine to Japan: A New Setting for Silent Hill
According to series producer Motoi Okamoto, “The setting of Silent Hill f has shifted from the town of Silent Hill to Japan. But it remains a psychological horror experience where one confronts themselves within a mental world.” The devs are really leaning into Japanese-style horror, focusing on the mix of beautiful and disturbing visuals. They want players to “find the beauty in terror.”
A Fresh Start: Meet Hinako Shimizu
For the first time ever, Silent Hill will take place outside of its classic American setting. You’ll step into the shoes of Hinako Shimizu, an ordinary high schooler, as she navigates her mysterious fog-covered hometown of Ebisugaoka. The devs shared that Hinako is just a regular girl, so combat is designed to be simple and believable — think steel pipes, not heavy weaponry — but still challenging.
Beauty in the Grotesque: The Main Theme
Game director Al Yang explained, “A key concept in Silent Hill f is the idea of beauty in terror. We created our visual designs to have a distinct uneasiness to them, but also [to] have a horrific charm that would make it so you just couldn’t stop staring.” The devs promise that you’ll see plenty of moments where you want to look away, but just can’t.
Why 1960s Japan?
Scriptwriter Ryukishi07, famous for the When They Cry series, had a specific reason for setting the game in the Showa Era. “Regarding the setting, we carefully considered which era would provide a stage and environment that could depict the theme of the story with a higher contrast, and I chose it accordingly. The Showa Era, though just half a century ago, feels like a different world — one that remains connected to our present, yet preserves customs and superstitions long-forgotten in modern life.”
Release Date and Platforms
Developed by NeoBards Entertainment and published by Konami, Silent Hill f is coming to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on September 25. Pre-orders are already open, so horror fans won’t have to wait much longer to explore this new chapter. For a closer look at what to expect, check out the dev livestream here:
