Silksong Isn’t Even Out Yet — Team Cherry Says They’re Already Planning Ambitious DLC

Team Cherry says it is already planning post-release content for Hollow Knight: Silksong, and the studio explained why the sequel took so long to make in a report by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg. The developers say the project grew from a DLC into a full standalone game, the team expanded what it wanted to include, and now they are looking ahead to additional content after launch.

- Sales context and how that affected development
- Team Cherry’s statement that they are already working on post-release content
Why Silksong took longer than expected
Originally, Silksong began as planned DLC for Hollow Knight. However, the project expanded into a standalone game during development. As a result, the team kept adding ideas and content, which extended the schedule.
Moreover, Team Cherry said it wanted to get the sequel right after Hollow Knight sold 15 million copies. In addition, the studio described Silksong as more ambitious: there are multiple towns and each town has its own set of quests, whereas Hollow Knight used a single hub.
“I remember at some point I just had to stop sketching,” says Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson, referencing his work crafting concept art for the game. “Because I went, ‘Everything I’m drawing here has to end up in the game. That’s a cool idea, that’s in. That’s a cool idea, that’s in.’ You realize, ‘If I don’t stop drawing, this is going to take 15 years to finish.'”
Post-release plans
According to the Bloomberg piece, Team Cherry confirmed it is already thinking about what it can add to Silksong after launch. The developers described those plans as ambitious and said they hope to find ways to bring additional ideas to life, although they did not give specific details or timelines.
What to expect next
In short, the release of Silksong will not be the end of the team’s work on the game. Instead, Team Cherry has framed the launch as the start of further development on post-release content, while keeping specifics under wraps for now.
