Silksong Launch Glitch Turns Steam’s Error Blobs Into a Boss — Fans Flood Socials With Hilarious Fan Art

Servers for multiple digital stores briefly went down on release day for Hollow Knight: Silksong, which stopped many players from buying or pre-loading the game and led Steam users to mock the outage by turning Steam’s error icons into fan art and jokes.
- Major storefront downtime prevented many purchases and pre-loads.
- Players compared Steam’s error blobs to Silksong’s early boss and made fan art.
- Multiple social posts and Reddit threads collected screenshots, jokes, and art.
- Most storefronts restored service later the same day, and buying the game is now generally possible.
What happened
On Silksong’s launch morning, several digital storefronts experienced outages that slowed or blocked purchases and pre-loads. As a result, large numbers of players were unable to buy or download the game immediately, and some streamers reported being unable to sell or show the game on stream.
Scale and impact
The outages affected multiple services at once, creating a situation where many potential buyers were effectively queued or stalled. However, most platforms restored service within a few hours and users were able to complete purchases after the interruptions ended.
How fans reacted
Fans treated the downtime as a meme opportunity. In particular, Steam’s stylized error blobs—small round icons that appear on error pages—became a recurring joke. Players compared those blobs to Silksong’s in-game enemy design, and several users posted images and fan art that blended the two ideas.
Some posts framed the error blobs as a new “first boss” to beat before reaching the actual game. Others simply shared screenshots of the error code while joking about the difficulty of getting the game on launch day.
Two direct social posts that captured the tone were shared by users on X:
“Silksong’s first boss is so fucking hard bro”
“Silksong is fun and all but this first boss fucking sucks”
Fan art and threads
Multiple X/Twitter posts collected images of the Steam error icons repurposed as small characters or bosses. Reddit users also started threads collecting the images and attempting to name the error blobs.
One Reddit thread discussed how the icons had “taken a life of their own,” and another included attempts to name each blob. You can read those Reddit discussions here:

About the in-game boss referenced
Reports referenced the actual in-game boss Moss Mother, a flying insect that appears early in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Moss Mother emerges from a cocoon, swoops down, and telegraphs attacks visibly. Players described the real fight as a basic learning encounter that introduces Hornet’s moveset rather than a major progression barrier.
At least one player shared footage of a no-damage run against Moss Mother on social media.
Current status and advice
By later the same day most storefronts had recovered and purchases proceeded normally. If you still run into trouble buying or downloading Silksong, standard troubleshooting steps—such as restarting your client or checking your connection—are reasonable first steps.
