Snag Chespin, Fennekin & Froakie in Pokémon Legends: Z-A — Quick Guide to the Lumiose Side Quests

If you want the Kalos starters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A — yes, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie — you can catch them in Lumiose City, but only after a few story beats and side quests. It’s straightforward, and each starter has its own short mission, so plan to explore a bit rather than rushing the main story.

How to get the Kalos starters in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
First, finish Main Mission 5, “The City in the Shadow of Prism Tower.” After completing Emma’s challenges in that mission, three side missions will appear on your map. Specifically, those side missions are for Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, and they all take place in Lumiose City.
The side missions appear in these spots:
- “A Feisty Chespin” — north of Restaurant Le Wow in the Rouge District, between Rouge Sector 2 and Académie Étoile.
- “Get Well, Fennekin” — northwest of Prism Tower, Magenta Sector 2.
- “A Challenge from Froakie” — northwest of the Jaune Pokémon Center on North Boulevard.
A Feisty Chespin
On the road between Rouge Sector 2 and Académie Étoile you’ll find a Chespin standing in front of a taxi. To recruit it, you must battle and defeat Chespin three times in a row. It’s a level 14 Pokémon, so bring party members at or above that level.
Chespin is a Grass type, so it’s weak to Flying, Poison, Bug, Fire, and Ice moves. Therefore, bring at least one of those types to make the fights easier. After you beat Chespin three consecutive times, it will join your party automatically — no Poké Balls required.
Get Well, Fennekin
In Magenta Sector 2, you’ll find a Fennekin that’s feeling sick. Talk to the NPC nearby (Branche) to start the side mission. Then head to Café Classe by the Vernal Pokémon Center to speak with an old man who asks you to fetch a revitalizing twig from Wild Zone 5.
Turn on mission guidance before you go, because the twigs are hidden across multiple levels. There are two main ways to reach the twig area: clear the sludge in the northwestern corner of Wild Zone 5, or clear sludge in Bleu Sector 3. Since you’re already in Wild Zone 5, clear the sludge in that northwestern corner using a Water or Psychic move and follow the lower path. Be aware there’s a level 27 alpha Whirlipede beyond one tunnel; you can fight it, but running past is a valid option.
There are many twigs scattered around, however the correct revitalizing twig is always the last one you pick up. Collect all the twigs in the area quickly, return to Fennekin, and give it the revitalizing twig. After that, the side mission completes and Fennekin will join your party.
A Challenge from Froakie
Froakie waits on scaffolding north of the Jaune Pokémon Center. Talk to the construction worker Surv to start the challenge. Froakie will only join you if you complete three timed parkour courses.
The first two courses are near the starting point and are mainly follow-the-path climbs. The third course, however, is at the northernmost point of Lumiose City (east of the Rouge Pokémon Center) and is the hardest. It includes two gaps that look impossible to cross unless you glide, but you can actually roll across them by pressing Y near the edge.
Complete all three courses within the time limits and Froakie will join your party when the final challenge ends.
