Spaceballs 2 Reveals Cast Photo Parodying The Force Awakens — Rick Moranis Returns to Live‑Action After 30 Years, Lewis Pullman & Keke Palmer Join
Production on Spaceballs 2 (apparently not the movie’s official title) is now underway, Amazon MGM Studios announced Thursday, and the studio released a cast-and-crew photo that deliberately mirrors the 2015 cast photo for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Cast and roles
The announcement confirms several returning actors and some new additions. Rick Moranis returns as Dark Helmet. Bill Pullman is back as Lone Starr. Daphne Zuniga returns as Vespa, and George Wyner appears as (presumably) Colonel Sandurz. Mel Brooks is listed again as Yogurt and Skroob.
New cast members include Lewis Pullman, Keke Palmer, Josh Gad, and Anthony Carrigan, all in unannounced roles. Lewis Pullman is reportedly playing Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Vespa, while Keke Palmer is listed as a new character named Destiny. Furthermore, this project marks Rick Moranis’ first live-action movie project in 30 years.
Photo parody details
The cast-and-crew photo intentionally recreates the 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens group shot, and it uses props and staging to echo that image. For example, the photo includes an Igloo cooler standing in for R2-D2, Mel Brooks appearing on the group call via laptop, and a supreme pizza placed on a chair. Also, Josh Gad appears seated next to a large fire hydrant in the photo.
Director and writers
Josh Greenbaum is listed as director. He directed the comedy Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Screenwriters named for the project are Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, whose credits include Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy and TMNT: Mutant Mayhem.
Release timing and studio note
The studio says the sequel is slated for release sometime in 2027. In the announcement, the production team also included this line verbatim: “While the title and plot details are being kept under wraps, the title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.”
Those are the confirmed facts so far. More details will likely arrive as production continues.
