SpaceX Admits Trespass — Cards Against Humanity Evicts Site and Replaces Cash with Free Elon-Themed Card Pack

Cards Against Humanity and SpaceX have reached a settlement after CAH sued SpaceX for trespassing on land the card-maker bought in 2017. According to court documents and a AP News report, SpaceX admitted on the record that it illegally trespassed, then removed equipment and gravel from the property. However, the settlement includes a confidentiality agreement that prevents either side from discussing the dollar amount. For context, CAH first filed the lawsuit after discovering the activity in September 2024; the card-maker had originally asked for $15 million in damages. More details about the original filing are available in this Gamespot article, and CAH posted a public update on the matter in a recent blog post.
Background
Cards Against Humanity bought the parcel of land near the U.S.–Mexico border in 2017 through a crowdfunding campaign. The stated goal at the time was to block a proposed border wall; the project was public-facing and can be seen on the CAH campaign page for stopping the wall. In September 2024, CAH reported finding that SpaceX had placed gravel and parked vehicles on that property. As a result, CAH filed a lawsuit alleging trespass and sought $15 million in damages, which was reported by outlets including Gamespot.
Settlement details
About thirteen months after the lawsuit began, both sides reached a settlement. According to court documents and CAH’s own update, SpaceX admitted the trespass and vacated the land. However, the settlement includes a confidentiality clause that bars either party from discussing its terms, including the amount paid (if any).
“Dear Horrible friends, remember last year, when we sued Elon Musk for dumping space garbage all over your land, and then you signed up to collect your share of the proceeds? Also, remember how we warned you that we’d ‘probably only be able to get you like two dollars or most likely nothing’? Well, Elon Musk’s team admitted on the record that they illegally trespassed on your land, and then they packed up the space garbage and fucked off. But when it comes to paying you all, he did the legal equivalent of throwing dust in our eyes and kicking us in the balls.”
CAH posted that statement in a blog update titled “Musk Update.” The company said it did not obtain enough recoverable funds to pay crowdfunders as originally promised. Meanwhile, CAH emphasized that SpaceX’s team acknowledged the trespass on the record. There has been no public comment from Elon Musk or SpaceX about the settlement.
What crowdfunders will get
Instead of a cash payout, CAH is offering participants in the original crowdfunding campaign a free mini-pack of Cards Against Humanity cards focused on Elon Musk. The company said the mini-pack will ship in early 2026. CAH provided a signup link for those who want the free pack; they offered the pack as a form of compensation after noting that recovering meaningful cash from the settlement was not possible.
“While we can’t give you what you really wanted — cash money from Elon Musk — we’re going to make it up to you, our best, sexiest customers…with comedy!”
CAH included the signup link in its post; you can sign up for the free mini-pack right here.
Land status
Following the settlement, CAH says SpaceX removed the gravel and vehicles and left the site. CAH stated its intention to return the land to a natural state and reiterated its original anti-wall purpose for the parcel.
“Soon, the land will be returned to its natural state: no space garbage, and still completely free of pointless fucking border walls.”
