Spider‑Man Set Skips Precons — Wizards Promises Official Marvel Commander Decks Are Coming

Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Spider-Man crossover won’t include pre-constructed Commander decks, but Wizards of the Coast says that *future* Marvel sets will. The Spider-Man set still launches on Sept. 26, yet Commander players can expect official Marvel precons later — just not with this first Spider-Man release.

What Wizards announced

Mark Rosewater, Magic’s head designer, confirmed: “We will be doing Commander decks for Marvel in the future,” Rosewater says. “So for Marvel fans who want to play with Commander, we’re making that. It’s just not going with this Spider-Man set.”

Therefore, while Spider-Man-themed precons aren’t coming now, Wizards has clearly stated that official 100-card Commander decks for Marvel will arrive with later collaborations.

Why Spider-Man has no precons

Originally, the Spider-Man set was planned as a much smaller release — roughly a 100-card set — but development changed midstream and the team expanded the design to 188 cards. As Rosewater explained: “Spider-Man started in a very different shape than it ended up,” Rosewater says. “It was a smaller set with fewer cards, and so it just didn’t make sense at that size set to have Commander decks. Then, during design, we realized we wanted to be bigger, but we weren’t able to then add in decks. It was just too late in the process.”

Consequently, the late decision to grow the set made adding preconstructed Commander decks impractical. For more background on the set’s initial plan, Wizards documented the original approach on this page.

Commander suggestions and links

Meanwhile, if you still want to pilot a Spider-Man-themed Commander, the set’s design lead Corey Bowen suggested building around characters like Doctor Octopus or Symbiote Spider-Man.

Also, Rosewater recommended Spider-Ham, Peter Porker as a fun Commander option. In short, you can build your own 100-card decks now, and expect official Marvel Commander precons in future sets.
