Springtrap arrives—deadlier than ever
With the launch of the 9.0.0 update, Springtrap officially enters the Dead by Daylight roster. This animatronic menace, straight from the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe, brings new abilities and perks that are designed to keep Survivors on their toes. The collaboration kicked off after the Dead by Daylight: Five Nights at Freddy’s public test beta, which ended on May 27.
To mark the occasion, Behaviour Interactive released a cinematic trailer, showing Springtrap in all his terrifying, animatronic glory. In the trailer, a Survivor hides in an office on the brand-new Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza map, watching helplessly as Springtrap chases down another character. But safety doesn’t last long—Springtrap eventually breaks into the office and delivers a brutal jump scare.
Gameplay: FNAF meets Dead by Daylight
For fans of both franchises, there are plenty of Easter eggs and nods to the original Five Nights at Freddy’s. When you play as Springtrap, you’ll notice more interactive mechanics than usual. Maps now feature security doors and cameras that Survivors can use or sabotage, adding a strategic layer straight from the FNAF playbook. Meanwhile, Springtrap is stronger than your average Killer, making each Trial even more intense.
Jay Guzzo, the designer behind Springtrap’s Killer mechanics, spoke about the challenge of blending the two very different gameplay styles:
“It goes without saying that Five Nights at Freddy’s and Dead by Daylight feature diametrically opposed gameplay,” said Jay Guzzo, Springtrap’s Killer designer. “In the former, you’re mainly sitting in one room and managing a single resource – your battery. Whereas in Dead by Daylight, it’s much more action-oriented, and sitting still will likely get you nowhere fast. Our challenge became finding a way to get those two things to coalesce. It came down to identifying what creates that incredible tension in Five Nights at Freddy’s and adapting it into a dynamic format for our own game.”
New goodies for fans
The crossover isn’t just about new gameplay. Players can unlock alternate costumes for Springtrap, including a special skin inspired by the Yellow Rabbit Outfit from the 2023 Five Nights at Freddy’s film. Yes, it features Matthew Lillard’s likeness and voice, making it a real treat for movie fans.
With Springtrap’s arrival, Dead by Daylight now boasts 39 Killers and 46 Survivors—a truly stacked horror lineup. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just jumping in, there’s never been a better time to test your nerves.
Dead by Daylight is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
