Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Trailer Drops Paul Giamatti Villain and First Hologram Cadet — Premieres Jan. 15

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set to land on screens on Jan. 15, Paramount confirmed at New York Comic Con. The new series puts a young-adult spin on the franchise and follows the first class of 32nd Century cadets enrolling at Starfleet Academy; furthermore, new episodes will drop weekly through March 12.

Starfleet Academy trailer

The trailer revealed at New York Comic Con opens with a striking scene that introduces the season’s villain, Nus Braka, played by Paul Giamatti. In that moment, Nus Braka is shown ripping a child away from his mother and telling the boy to hold on to his hatred. Later, the trailer follows that child as he grows into Caleb Mir, played by Sandro Rosta, who becomes a cadet at Starfleet Academy and is recruited by chancellor Nahla Ake, played by Holly Hunter.

Another preview focuses more on campus life and friendships, and it highlights a holographic student named Series Acclimation Mil, a.k.a. Sam, played by Kerrice Brooks. That trailer also shows Sam bonding with Robert Picardo’s character from Star Trek: Voyager.

Key casting announced and shown in the trailers includes:

In addition, Stephen Colbert will be the voice of the series’ digital dean of students, making announcements on campus.

The footage mixes training scenes with everyday campus life. For instance, the preview shows cadets touring the Academy, running drills, attending classes, and forming relationships. Additionally, the trailers include moments of romance and interpersonal drama alongside action and world-building.

Premiere and schedule

Paramount announced at New York Comic Con that Starfleet Academy will premiere on Jan. 15. New episodes will then be released weekly, continuing through March 12.
