Strange New Worlds Just Made Janeway’s Tuvix Decision Look Even Worse

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 8 — “Four-and-a-Half Vulcans” — features a plot where four Enterprise crew members are transformed into Vulcans by an experimental serum, and the episode draws a clear comparison to the Voyager episode “Tuvix.” This report summarizes the episode’s main facts, names the cast involved, and notes the chronological link to Voyager’s 1996 story.

What happened in Strange New Worlds

In season 3, episode 8, titled “Four-and-a-Half Vulcans”, Captain Christopher Pike, Nurse Christine Chapel, Chief of Security La’An Noonien-Singh, and Communications Officer Nyota Uhura are transformed into Vulcans using a serum previously shown in the series.

The transformation is performed so the Enterprise can assist a pre-warp species that has made contact with Vulcans but not yet with other aliens. After the procedure, the four crew members do not immediately revert to their human forms. When a reversal becomes possible, they initially say they wish to remain Vulcan and are allowed to return to duty.

Later in the episode, the transformed crew display behaviors tied to Vulcan culture: Pike adopts a more condescending demeanor, Chapel becomes intensely work-focused, and Uhura tries to push her boyfriend to change as well. Most of the transformed crew ultimately choose to revert to human after those behaviors cause problems, though La’An’s reaction is different: her augmented DNA — linked to her ancestor Khan Noonien Singh — triggers Romulan-like scheming.

James T. Kirk and engineer Montgomery Scott intervene to stop La’An’s plan to start a war. In the episode, Spock helps persuade La’An to change back. The series also introduces a Vulcan named Doug, played by Patton Oswalt, who uses a psychic technique intended to access the transformed crew’s subconscious minds to confirm their actual wishes.

How it connects to Voyager’s “Tuvix”

The Voyager episode “Tuvix” (1996) shows a transporter accident that fuses Lieutenant Tuvok and Neelix into a single sentient being called Tuvix. That character integrates into Voyager’s crew and performs well in duties for a period of time.

According to the Voyager storyline, the ship’s medical team later discovers a method to separate Tuvox back into Tuvok and Neelix. Tuvix objects and says he wishes to remain as he is. The Doctor initially refuses to perform the separation; however, Captain Kathryn Janeway ultimately orders and carries out the procedure herself, resulting in the reappearance of Tuvok and Neelix and the death of Tuvix.

Details about the Voyager episode can be found on the Memory Alpha page for “Tuvix”.
