The Boys: Diabolical Probably Won’t Return — Kripke Confirms; Gen V, Vought Rising and Mexico Still in the Works

Good news for anyone still keeping up with The Boys universe: several spinoffs are moving ahead, but there’s one show that likely won’t return. In a recent interview with The Wrap, series showrunner Erik Kripke explained what’s next for the franchise and delivered the disappointing update about the animated anthology.

Diabolical season 2 — status

Erik Kripke said plainly, “I don’t think there’s going to be a Season 2 of Diabolical.” Furthermore, he added, “It’s not for lack of us pushing. I think ultimately the viewer numbers weren’t there to justify a second season, sadly.” Therefore, while the creative team and showrunner Simon Racioppa would be open to more, Amazon has not given a green light.

What Diabolical was

The Boys: Diabolical was an eight-episode animated anthology set in The Boys universe. It gave different creators room to experiment, so the episodes varied in tone and style. For example, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg made a Looney Tunes-style short called “Laser Baby’s Day Out,” while the show also featured work from Andy Samberg and Akwafina. Comic creator Garth Ennis wrote an episode, and showrunner Simon Racioppa contributed a story exploring Homelander’s early days as a superhero.

Other The Boys spinoffs

Meanwhile, Kripke confirmed progress on several other projects. He said he already has a plan for Gen V season 3, with the spinoff currently wrapping up its second season. In addition, Vought Rising is in motion: season 1 is in production, and Kripke said he’s “mapping out season 2 as we speak.”

Finally, The Boys: Mexico remains in development. Kripke said, “Mexico is just being developed right now. The pilot script is being written. Gareth is a wonderful writer and I think it’s hilarious. I hope it gets made, but [it’s] just in that development phase.” The project is being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and is reported to star Gael García Bernal.

Where to watch

The Boys main series is expected to air its fifth and final season in 2026. For now, The Boys: Diabolical is available to stream on Prime Video.
