The Dragon Prince creators launch ‘The Dragon King’ Kickstarter — campaign tops $570K with returning cast

The Dragon Prince co-creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond are asking fans to help fund a spinoff called The Dragon King through a Kickstarter. The campaign has already passed its initial $250,000 goal, and the new project would continue the story with many returning cast and crew.

Kickstarter campaign and funding

After debuting the idea for The Dragon King at San Diego Comic-Con, Ehasz and Richmond launched a Kickstarter to raise money to develop teasers and pitch materials.

The campaign set an initial goal of $250,000 and has already passed that mark, with backers pledging more than $570,000 so far. According to the Kickstarter page, the funds will be used to create teasers that can be used to pitch the show to studios and partners.

Story premise and returning cast

The new series is set seven years after the events of The Dragon Prince. It follows the ascension of the Dragon Prince Zym as he attempts to maintain a fragile peace in Xadia, and it introduces the return of an exile with a claim to the throne.

Creators and directors

The project is led by co-creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond, with regular The Dragon Prince director Villads Spangsberg also attached.

Voice cast

Several original cast members are listed as returning. That includes Jack De Sena as Prince Callum, Paula Burrows as Rayla, and Racquel Belmonte as Claudia. Dante Basco, who voiced Zym in The Dragon Prince’s finale, is expected to have a larger role in the spinoff.

Additionally, Critical Role’s Liam O’Brien is joining the cast as a new character named Luna Devorans.

Backer rewards and stretch goals

The Kickstarter offers a range of perks for backers. These include access to a campaign Discord, physical swag such as a patch depicting Zym or a plushie version of Callum’s pet glow toad bait, and higher-tier rewards like producer credits, minor speaking roles, and a studio tour.

Furthermore, the campaign states that if it reaches $1 million, Liam O’Brien and some other cast members will appear in an actual-play one-shot using the official tabletop game Tales of Xadia.
