What to Expect from Mortal Kombat II

The official Mortal Kombat II film, directed again by Simon McQuoid, is set to hit theaters on October 24. The latest teaser trailer, featuring Karl Urban stepping into Johnny Cage’s shoes, gives fans a taste of what’s coming. Urban’s Cage is all swagger, flipping up his sunglasses with a middle finger salute and wielding cheesy martial arts weapons to take down foes. The trailer even ends with a big explosion and the title card Uncaged Fury. Worth noting: this teaser is actually a promo for the full trailer, which will drop on July 17 at 12 p.m. ET. You can also join the hype with the “Trailer Event Countdown” on YouTube starting at 11:05 a.m. ET that day.

Returning Faces and New Blood

Besides Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, many familiar characters are back. Tadanobu Asano and Hiroyuki Sanada reprise their roles as Raiden and Scorpion, while Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Jessica McNamee, and Lewis Tan return as Sub-Zero, Jax Briggs, Sonya Blade, and Cole Young, respectively. Interestingly, Josh Lawson and Max Huang are expected to come back as Kano and Kung Lao, even though their characters died in the first film. Newcomers include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and bodybuilder Martyn Ford taking on the fearsome Shao Kahn.

The Tournament with Real Stakes

This time around, Mortal Kombat II promises to include the actual tournament, a key element missing from the first movie. According to Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, “if Earthrealm loses its 10th consecutive tournament against Outworld, then Shao Kahn will invade Earth and take over.” Boon also teased a “visual representation of who is winning” so viewers can keep track of the high stakes. He added, “It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”

All this builds up to an October release that Mortal Kombat fans are eagerly awaiting. Stay tuned!
