Tony Hawk’s nostalgia and the future of the franchise

Tony Hawk has been a pro skater for over 40 years, and he totally gets why fans crave remasters and remakes of the classics. In a recent chat, Tony shared that the “nostalgia factor” is what really makes these games special. But he’s not just about bringing back the past. He wants to mix things up with new characters, new tricks, and fresh levels.

As Tony puts it: “To update it not just to celebrate the origins, and the original characters, but to update it with newer characters, new tricks, and in this case new levels, that’s the most exciting factor for me.” He’s all in for a “Best of THPS 3 and 4,” but with a twist that takes it to a whole new level.

Special collabs: Tony the Tiger joins the skate park

This remaster isn’t just about skaters. Tony Hawk is teaming up with an unexpected old friend — Tony the Tiger! Back in the ‘90s, Hawk was the stunt double for the Frosted Flakes mascot in a TV ad. Now, the two Tonys are reuniting in-game. You’ll be able to grab Tony the Tiger cosmetic gear in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4. Hawk is pretty sentimental about this collab, saying:

“When I did that, it was just a huge honor for me… When you see that commercial you can tell it’s me skating; you can tell from the style. Even back then, in the 1990s, skating was on the downslide of popularity, so I didn’t imagine that I’d even be able to skate going into my 30s or 40s, especially doing it for a living, so to have a collaboration that involves our video game, it is surreal. I’m so thankful that they reached out to me.”

Fan favorites return: Bam Margera & Jack Black

If you loved the original roster, there’s more good news. Bam Margera, who was once uncertain for the remaster, is officially back thanks to Tony’s personal push. Hawk shared, “He just seems highly motivated and I felt like we should bring that energy back to the game. It was all very last-minute… He got scanned in record time [laughs].”

But that’s not all. Jack Black returns as Constable Richard, the British version of Officer Dick, and Hawk says he’s “the most exciting character” to hit 3 and 4. The game is truly shaping up to be a celebration of everything fans love — with a few wild cards thrown in.

What about a Tony Hawk’s Underground remake?

Of course, everyone’s asking: Will Tony Hawk’s Underground get the same remaster treatment? Tony’s honest: “That, ultimately, will be decided by Activision. But in terms of where it goes, I would lean heavily on what the fans want… I hear a lot of noise about people wanting Underground remakes and remasters, and in the chronology of the game, that’s where we would go next. I would love to see that. I don’t really know if we’ll get to do it again. We’re on the precipice of the new release, so we’ll see.”

Release date and platforms

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 lands on July 11. The remaster is coming to Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering the series, this is one summer release you won’t want to miss!
