Want Eternatus? How to Unlock It in Pokémon Go — Warning: It Needs 8,900 Candy

Eternatus has arrived in Pokémon Go as part of the Max Battle-themed summer finale, and it’s a unique Legendary you can’t catch in the wild — you have to earn it. Below I’ll cover how to get Eternatus, what its Adventure Effect does, and how much candy you’ll need to power it up so you can plan your Max Battle weekend.
- How to obtain Eternatus through the Go Pass and the timing limits.
- What the Dynamax Cannon Adventure Effect does, costs, and duration.
- How much candy and XL candy Eternatus needs and the best ways to farm it.
How to get Eternatus in Pokémon Go
The standard way for most players to get Eternatus is by reaching rank 60 in the Go Pass: Max Finale. The pass uses the familiar Go Pass format but in a condensed form: it takes 10 points to rank up, and there’s normally a daily cap on how many levels you can earn. However, during the Go Fest: Max Finale weekend on Aug. 23–24, that cap is lifted, so you can rank up as much as you like.
Most Go Pass tasks that grant points are tied to Max Battles, so you’ll want to play those a lot. Also, players who attended the 2025 Pokémon World Championships in Anaheim, California were given an early opportunity to obtain Eternatus; those attendees will not receive a second Eternatus from the Go Pass, but instead will receive Eternatus Candy.
Eternatus’ Adventure Effect, explained
In exchange for 5,000 Stardust and 30 Eternatus Candy, you can activate the Dynamax Cannon Adventure Effect. For 10 minutes, this effect boosts all your Pokémon’s Max Moves by one level. That means:
- Any locked Max Moves will temporarily become level 1.
- Any Max Moves that are already maxed at level 3 will be bumped to level 4 — a level normally unavailable without this effect.
As usual, you can only have one Adventure Effect active at a time. Additionally, you can extend the duration up to 24 hours by spending more Eternatus Candy and Stardust.
How to power up Eternatus in Pokémon Go
Eternatus levels like other Pokémon, using Candy and Stardust, but it needs a *lot* of candy to reach the maximum level. According to Leek Duck, you’ll need 8,900 Eternatus Candy and 8,900 Eternatus Candy XL to fully raise Eternatus to level 50. You’ll also need additional resources to level up its Max Moves.
It is now confirmed that Eternatus will require 8,900 Candy and 8,900 Candy XL to power up to the maximum CP.

Practical ways to earn Eternatus candy include:
- Earn candy from the Go Pass: Max Battle (ranks 61–87 in the pass).
- Buy the deluxe version of the Go Pass: Max Battle for increased candy gains ($14.99).
- Battle and win against Eternamax Eternatus in Max Battles during the Aug. 23–24 weekend. According to the Silph Road subreddit, wins can give around 60–140 candy and 38–57 candy XL per win.
- Convert Rare Candy as needed, though you’ll need a very large amount if you go that route.

Bottom line
If you want Eternatus, plan to grind Max Battles and rank the Go Pass: Max Finale — and be prepared to spend a lot of candy if you want a fully powered-up Eternatus. The Aug. 23–24 Max Finale weekend is the key time to remove caps and farm both the Pokémon and its candy efficiently.
