Warcraft director jumps into Unreal

Duncan Jones, the filmmaker behind Warcraft and Mute, is back at it. This time, he’s adapting the legendary Rogue Trooper from the pages of 2000 AD. The big twist? The movie is created entirely in Unreal Engine 5, the same tech behind 2025’s hottest games like Split Fiction and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. That’s right—what you’ll see on screen is powered by the same tools that drive next-gen gaming.

First look and cast revealed

Producer Stuart Fenegan shared: “We are so excited to share a first look of the film and show the amazing fidelity with which the team have used our actors on set performances to drive the animated characters. That level of detail and nuance was a priority from day one.” The cast is pretty stacked—Aneurin Barnard voices Rogue, with Hayley Atwell, Sean Bean, and Asa Butterfield joining the lineup.

What is Rogue Trooper about?

If you’re new to the story, here’s the quick scoop: Rogue Trooper is a “Genetic Infantryman,” created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons. He’s the last survivor of an invasion force, out for revenge on the traitor who betrayed his squad. What’s wild? His fallen squadmates’ personalities live on—in his gun, helmet, and backpack. It’s classic sci-fi, full of action and dark humor.

When can we watch it?

There’s no trailer or exact release date yet, but Rogue Trooper is expected to drop sometime in 2025. Fans won’t have to wait long for more updates, though—Jones teased some big news coming to San Diego Comic-Con next month: “AHHHHHHHHHHHH! WE’RE ALMOST FINISHED! SEE YOU AT SDCC!!”
