Why Lost in Random’s Roguelike Spin The Eternal Die Is a Game You Can’t Miss

The team behind Lost in Random always believed the game’s quirky world and dice-based mechanics would make a perfect match for a roguelike. Now, with Lost in Random: The Eternal Die, that vision has come to life in a fast-paced, combat-focused adventure.
- Why Lost in Random fits the roguelike genre
- New gameplay focus and story perspective
- Influences and developer insights
- Future plans for The Eternal Die
From Adventure to Roguelike
While the original Lost in Random (2021) wasn’t a roguelike, director Martin Storm shared that the idea of turning it into one felt natural. “Lost in Random being a roguelike sounded like a great idea and [way] to continue with the IP, but taking a new spin on it,” he explained. The Eternal Die lets players step into the shoes of Queen Aleksandra, the antagonist from the first game, who fights alongside her sentient die, Fortune, through constantly changing levels to escape a powerful artifact.
Gameplay and Style Shift
Unlike Even, the protagonist of Lost in Random who could explore the Kingdom of Random at her own pace, The Eternal Die demands quick reflexes and strategy. The game is packed with challenging fights, with story moments appearing mostly before boss battles or between runs. Martin Storm acknowledged the influence of the critically acclaimed roguelike Hades on their design. “Obviously Hades was a big inspiration. I think Supergiant [Games] deserves a lot of praise, honestly. It’s like they’ve shone a new light on the roguelite and roguelike genre… they showed a way to have narrative and great gameplay in the genre.”
Keeping the Spirit Alive
The Eternal Die was developed by Stormteller Games, a new studio, but about half of the 19-person team worked on the original Lost in Random. This helped maintain the series’ unique charm and quirky vibe. “I think having so many people who worked on the first game in this also just helped with the essence. They know Lost in Random at heart,” said Storm.
What’s Next?
While Storm couldn’t reveal much about upcoming projects, he did confirm ongoing support for The Eternal Die with new content planned. “We are continuing on new things for The Eternal Die. I cannot say what or when, but we will add content to the game.”
Lost in Random: The Eternal Die is available now on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
