Why Remaking Dragon Quest 7 Now Might Be a Miss – What Should Come First?

Remaking Dragon Quest 7 Right Now: Does It Really Make Sense?

Dragon Quest 7 is undoubtedly a beloved title in the series, but the question is—should it be the next game to get the remake treatment? While Square Enix is reportedly working on a Dragon Quest 7 remake for a 2026 or 2027 release, many fans wonder if other mainline entries deserve the spotlight first.

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 7 Remake Plans

Following the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3 and upcoming remakes of the first two games scheduled for October 2025, Square Enix is reportedly gearing up to remake Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. This remake would finally bring the game out of its 3DS-only cage, making it accessible to a broader audience on modern platforms.

According to mp1st, internal documents hint at this project, though Square Enix hasn’t made an official announcement yet. The publisher has been contacted for comments, and updates will follow if any come through.

Why Prioritize Dragon Quest 7?

Dragon Quest 7 is a fan favorite but also known for its exceptional length. Unlike Dragon Quest 4, which takes roughly 40 hours to complete, Dragon Quest 7 can easily stretch beyond 80 hours for a casual playthrough. This makes it a bit of a slow burn, something that could be addressed in the remake to attract new players.

Remaking Dragon Quest 7 offers a chance to streamline the experience, cutting down on some of the pacing issues while keeping the core story intact. This could help the game appeal to modern audiences who discovered the series through the recent remakes.

Other Dragon Quest Games Deserve Attention Too

While Dragon Quest 7’s remake sounds exciting, many believe other entries in the series should come first. The Dragon Quest 4: Chapters of the Chosen and Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride are often cited as better candidates for remakes. Dragon Quest 5, in particular, holds a special place in the hearts of fans and even inspired the 2020 Dragon Quest animated movie.

Completing the remakes of the Erdrick trilogy (Dragon Quest 1, 2, and 3) is already in progress, and moving on to the Zenithian trilogy starting with Dragon Quest 4 would make narrative sense. Plus, Dragon Quest 5 is widely considered one of the best in the series and has strong emotional connections with players.

Looking Ahead

We’ve been eagerly awaiting more news about Dragon Quest 12 since its announcement in 2021, but until then, any news about the franchise—remake or new—tends to excite fans. Even if the choice to remake Dragon Quest 7 now feels a bit unexpected, it still means more Dragon Quest content is on the horizon.
