Bigger world and key factions
According to Willingham and Riegel, this series spends time establishing a broader geography than The Legend of Vox Machina. In particular, the show highlights the Kryn Dynasty and the Dwendalian Empire before we meet the main cast. Thus, viewers should expect more scenes set around institutions and nations outside the immediate group’s original scope.
Magic and Dunamancy
Magic plays a more prominent and codified role in The Mighty Nein. Specifically, Dunamancy — a form of magic developed by Matthew Mercer during Campaign 2 — is stated to be an important element in the series. Consequently, the show will introduce new spells, feats, and powers tied to that system, and it will treat how people learn or acquire magic as a significant plot point.
Episode length and structure
Episodes of The Mighty Nein are longer than those of The Legend of Vox Machina. Therefore, the series has additional runtime to cut away to other parts of the world and to include scenes that were not part of the original actual-play campaign. As a result, the adaptation can show individual character moments and backstory beats earlier and in more detail.
Characters and tone
The Mighty Nein are described as more morally grey than Vox Machina. Unlike Vox Machina, the group does not begin their story in a tavern. As Sam Riegel puts it: “They’re not just heroes who want to do hero stuff. They’ve got real sh*t to work through.” Thus, the characters can take darker, less altruistic actions when necessary, and viewers will see them as individuals before they form a cohesive party.
For example, the series includes the first meeting of Fjord and Jester, and it will add new scenes that expand or clarify character arcs from Campaign 2. The adaptation is intentionally structured so new viewers and long-time fans both get context and new material.
Where to watch and extra resources
The animated series premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 19. Meanwhile, if you want to revisit Campaign 2 before the show, Critical Role’s Campaign 2 is available on Spotify and on YouTube. The campaign’s episodes are posted on YouTube for those who prefer video.
Also, a report teasing a new route for Yasha’s backstory is available via an interview and feature at Entertainment Weekly. The article notes that actress Ashley Johnson’s limited availability during the actual-play campaign affected Yasha’s screen time then, and the animated series will explore her arc further.
