What the expansion includes
The expansion adds 80 new dragon cards, 25 caves, and five dragon guilds to the Wyrmspan base game. Moreover, it brings a new card type called fledglings, which represent adolescent dragons that can be trained over time.
Wyrmspan was created by Connie Vogelmann and illustrated by Clémentine Campardou, who both return for Dragon Academy. Also, the original Wyrmspan page has more background on the base game: Wyrmspan: Dragon Academy.
Gameplay changes and new mechanics
Fledglings require training to reach full potential. Specifically, when you explore a cave with a fledgling, you can spend a designated resource to place a training token on the card. After filling the training bar, the fledgling unlocks an extra ability.
In addition, the expansion adjusts turn incentives. Players who pass their turn for a round receive bonus resources. This aims to help players who fall behind catch up, and it also changes strategic math for players weighing immediate actions against preparing for the next round.
When and where to buy
Stonemaier Games will launch Wyrmspan: Dragon Academy through its online store on Sept. 10. For direct purchases and more details, see the publisher’s store: Stonemaier Games online store.
Finspan and Wingspan: what’s next
Stonemaier said the first expansion for Finspan and a new Wingspan expansion are currently in pre-production and expected to launch in early 2026. Meanwhile, if you want new Wingspan content sooner, a set of fan-designed bird packs will be available to order from Stonemaier on Oct. 15.
